Glass filter funnels is a tube or pipe that is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, used to transfer liquid or powder into a small opening. Funnels are usually made of borosilicate glass and it has shown to be chemical resistant. Funnels do come in different materials like, plastic, stainless steel and porcelain.
When choosing the type of funnel to use it is imperative to carefully study the application of it as to know which material would be suitable enough to withstand the weight of the substance being transferred, and it should not react with the substance. For this reason, stainless steel or glass are suitable in transferring diesel, while plastic funnels are normally used in the kitchen. Sometimes disposable paper funnels are used in cases where it would be difficult to adequately clean the funnel afterwards (for example, in adding motor oil to a car). Dropper funnels, also called dropping funnels or tap funnels, have a tap to allow the controlled release of a liquid. A flat funnel,[1] made of polypropylene, utilizes living hinges and flexible walls to fold flat.
Glass filter funnel, also known as separation funnel, is used in liquid-liquid extractions to separate the components of a mixture between two non-miscible solvent phases of different densities.
When glass funnel is used with filter paper, filter funnels, Büchner and Hirsch funnels can be used to remove fine particles from a liquid in a process called filtration (is a physical, biological or chemical operation that separates solid particles and liquid particles from a mixture with a filter medium that has a complex structure through which only the fluid can pass through. Solid particles that cannot pass through the filter medium are described as oversize and the fluid that passes through is called the filtrate). For more demanding applications, the filter paper in the latter two may be replaced with a sintered glass frit. The liquid that pass through the filter paper is received by a glass filter funnel which is also made from a borosilicate glass and the solid remains in the filter paper and the separation is then achieved. Glass filter funnel comes in different range: 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 65mm, 75mm, 80mm, 100mm, 125mm and 150mm.
For good maintenance it is always advisable to carefully rinse a glass filter funnel after application and leave it to dry up for the next use as glassware require good maintenance.
