Specimen Cups
Ideal for the collection and transport of patient samples including urine and sputum and also for use with formalin and fixative fills. Specimen containers are manufactured from shatterproof polypropylene featuring a cap design to help prevent leakage.
The specimen cups or urine cups are used for different medical applications and commonly use in collecting urine to designed in a way that they can prevent any leaks of the sample, block odour and resist shattering. Comes in 45ml or 65ml. Types of urine specimens that can be collected using specimen cups: 1) first morning specimen which is the best time to collect urine specimen is in the morning because urine is normally concentrated at that time due to the fact that it has stayed longer in the blooder overnight, free of dietary influences, changes due to abnormal activities. 2) Single random specimen can be taken at any time of the day or night 3) Timed short term specimen which can range from the period of 2 hours to 24 hour collections. 4) Timed long specimen, 12 to 24 hour urine specimen, a very important diagnostic test since it reveals how the kidney adjust to changing physiologic needs over a long period hence the random urine specimen can not be a presentable sample taking place over a period of 24 hours since the kidney excretes substances at different rate and quantity during the day and night. 5) Catheterized specimen. 6) Double voided specimen, which is for sugar and acetone. 7) Midstream (clean catch) specimen for urine culture and cytological analysis.
Specimen collection: 10ml urine in a specimen cup is acceptable for a presentable specimen amount in order for the laboratory to perform analysis and specimen must be placed in a sterile specimen cup and it has to be examined within two hours after collection preferable because if urine stand for too long it becomes alkaline as the bacteria start to split the urea in urine into ammonia and the tests are inaccurate since the urine has resulted in high alkaline. It is important to store urine specimen in the refrigerator if the specimen cannot be send to the laboratory for testing within the 2 hour period.
Urine testing is constructed to detect bacteria and fungi in urine when testing for urinary tract infection in the laboratory and once the bacteria is detected then suitable antibiotics can be given.
