Pipette Tips & Racks are disposable, autoclavable attachments for the uptake and dispensing of liquids using a micropipette. Micropipettes can be used in a number of laboratories, a research/diagnostic lab can use micropipette tips to dispense liquids into a well plate for PCR assays. A microbiology laboratory testing industrial products may also use micropipette tips to dispense its testing products. The volume of microliters each tip can hold varies, 0.5-10µL, 2-20µL, 20-200µL, and 200-1000µL (1mL) are the four standard tips. Pipette Tips are made of polypropylene and are clear to allow for easy view of the tips contents. Micropipette tips can be purchased non-sterile or sterile
Description
- Pipette Tips are disposable, autoclavable attachments for the uptake and dispensing of liquids using a micropipette.
- A microbiology laboratory testing industrial products may also use micropipette tips to dispense its testing products such as paint and caulk.

Types of pipette tips
Pipette tips come in three different types including:
- non-sterile
- Pre-sterilized and
- Filtered tips.
The most commonly used type of pipette tip is non-sterile tips.
They are often used in laboratory applications where sterility is not important to the experiment or test being performed.
How to use pipette tips
- A pipette works by creating a vacuum above the liquid-holding chamber and selectively releasing this vacuum to draw up and dispense liquid.
- Pipettes that dispense between 1 and 1000 are termed micropipettes, while macro-pipettes dispense a greater volume of liquid.
Sterilization of pipette tips
- Open the lid of the tip tray a tad—propping it up with the lids locking tab helps; a little tape can hold it in place don not wrap the box in foil
- Run your dry cycle as normal.
- Let the damp tips dry in the warm autoclave (or transfer to a drying cabinet/incubator)
Accuracy of pipette
- Volumetric pipets are so accurate because the long neck decreases the error in measuring volume of the meniscus.
- Graduated cylinders are designed for accurate measurements of liquids with a much smaller error than beakers
